THE CAUSE

The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation supports cancer care and research to prevent, detect, diagnose, and cure cancer. Race for Research is helping the Cancer Foundation with a focus on researching brain cancer treatments.

There are many medical experts who have incredible, innovative ideas of how to combat cancer. What these doctors and researchers need most to turn their research into reality is funding. The money raised through Race for Research will go directly to researching treatment options right here in Ottawa. This research will have a real, tangible impact on the lives of local families dealing with brain cancer.

The organizers of this event know personally how much brain cancer can change someone's life. They also know what an amazing effect a new treatment approach and innovative doctors can have.

By being part of Race for Research, you are helping to give people in Ottawa living with brain cancer and their families real hope for the future!

In the past 5 years, money raised for brain cancer research through South Ottawa Race Day has been dedicated to two exciting avenues:

1. Dr. Ian Lorimer is the J. Adrien and Eileen Leger Chair in Cancer Research and an internationally recognized researcher in glioblastoma. His lab is currently leading research into the molecules that drive the aggressive behaviour of brain tumours, and is also doing preliminary work with oncolytic viruses. These scientific breakthroughs pave the way for the treatments of tomorrow.

2. The Clinical Trials Office (CTO) at The Ottawa Hospital is involved in direct clinical research for people in the region affected with cancer. Due to the efforts of this group, innumerable patients in Ottawa and the surrounding area have had access to the newest and most cutting edge treatments for their brain tumours. The CTO ran the trials that established temozolomide and bevacizumab as standard treatments, and is currently involved in exciting trials of cancer vaccines and new drugs.

Thank you for being part of this annual tradition in support of brain cancer research!
